Overview.
DocJet is a wonderful utility for opening:
1) objects (files, applications, controls, folders, disks and so on),
2) groups of different objects by using specified applications,
3) specified kind of objects by using alternative applications,
4) specified kind of objects by using Internet Config's Post Process setting.
The first option works by means of keystrokes, the second through dragging+keystrokes, the remaining by simple dragging. Naturally you may also work from within DocJet, by using buttons.
You may create a data base containing all entries you need then remove all aliases from desktop, leaving DocJet alone: it may supersede all af them!
DocJet is Internet Config, Drag Manager and Navigation Manager aware, moreover it's Appearance savvy. It requires at least System 7 to run.

Hardware and software requirements.
DocJet should work on any Macintosh using, at least, System 7. It's accelerated for PowerPC. Whether you've Appearance Manager you may take advantage of it. The same for Navigation Manager. Some menu items may be disabled if you don't have Internet Config 2.0 installed (only on PowerMac).
How it works.
1-Drop Application.
When you, simply, open objects then DocJet searches into its data base for appropriate records, related to the objects types. If records exist it opens any of your objects by using the related applications. Differently creates new records. To create a new record DocJet asks you to select the application of your choice. If you don't select the application the new record don't be created.
You can drag objects onto DocJet icon (in this case, and only whether it was previously closed, it quits itself after completing its job), or else onto its main window. You can also use the "Application" button, selecting the object to open through a "Get File" dialog and, only if you should create a new record, selecting one application by means of another dialog.
To delete a record, press "Remove App" button and select one object having the type you want to remove.
2-Master Application.
When you open objects holding down a key, DocJet looks at the key then searches, into its database, for an appropriate record. If a record exists it opens ALL of your objects by using the recorded application differently asks you for a new record, following the way of above.
As above you can drag objects onto DocJet icon or onto its main window.You can also use the "Master" button selecting first an object (holding down a key) through a "Get File" dialog then, if you should create a new record, selecting one application by means of another dialog.
To delete a record, press "Remove Master" holding down the related key.
3-Opener.
DocJet allows you to open directly applications, documents, disks, folders, controls, desk accessories, doors (ooops...), just the same way you double-click on their icons…
You can open object holding down the object-related key while pressing the "Opener" button or else holding down command key while you double-click on DocJet icon (in this case a little window asks you to type a key then, after completing its job, DocJet quits itself).
As above: if a key-related record doesn't exist DocJet asks you for a new record.
To remove a record, press "Remove Opener" holding down the related key.
4-Internet Config's Post Process.
When you open Internet Config (http://www.quinn.echidna.id.au/Quinn/Config/) you find the "File Mappings" button:

"The File Mappings window lets you view and edit the table that is used to set the Macintosh file type and creator of incoming files based on their extension. If you don't understand this window then please don't worry. We've done our best to set up appropriate defaults. If you have any problems with file transfers, then resetting to factory defaults will probably help."
Well, in fact File Mappings is an useful, customizable, database of types, creators and name exensions that DocJet may use with benefit: if you check "Try Internet Config's Post Process" menu item then DocJet adds a new ability to "Drop Application" feature; when you drag a object it searches the Internet Config's File Mappings for extension of name matching those of your object. If succeed try to open it by using the Post Process application, whether there's one set. If "extension" attempt fails then it try againg following a type/creator search. If DocJet can't open the object by using Internet Config's Post Process then continues by using the "Drop Application" procedure.

Notes.
1: Memory: DocJet works wery well, in "normal" condition but, if you want to open a hell of a lot of files, by using Drag Manager and/or "Master Applications", make sure to set rationally the DocJet memory partition size.
2: Available keys for "Master Application" and "Opener" modes: any key on your keyboard except modifier keys. Besides, since all function keys have the same character code, DocJet considers all function keys as one key:-\ sorry.
3: From 1.3.0 version DocJet has changed its record's format. Leaving the old preferences is absolutely safe: simply DocJet ignores old records. But trashing the old preferences is recommendable for disk space reason :-)
4: DocJet plays a little "click" when finds a record. This is particularly useful when it's opening an application DropKeys based: you can use DropKeys just after the "click".
5: To avoid problems with macro editors like KeyQuencer, DocJet doesn't recognize character associated with modifier keys. Neither the 2nd byte of character, if present.

The unregistered version.
After the trial period of one week, the unregistered version of DocJet is, still, fully operational; however it will always show a reminder and its "about" box when you open it. When you register DocJet the irritating windows don't appear and the "unregistered" notice will be replaced by the registration information.
Notice: soon after registering, you will receive the serial number via e-mail.
DocJet can also be included, without my prior permission, without changes and with this "Read Me", in all CD-ROM or disk shareware collections and in all CD-ROM or Disk magazines (anyway an e-mail or a snail mail would be welcome, as well a copy of the magazine or media would be welcome :-).
